How wide would you like your outdoor stairs to be?
Stair balustrade INTEGRATED assembly
This outside stair is equiped with an integrated wooden handrail:
The balusters are integrated within the width of your stair step. A hole will be cut in some stair steps to make space for the baluster. This decreases the effective width of your step! If you have a 60cm wide stair and you would cut out 85mm on the left and right for your balusters, the effective width of your stair becomes 43 centimeters... Frankly speaking; you need to be a very skinny person to climb those stairs! So we don't offer 60cm wide outdoor stairs as a kit, but you can compose it with the outside stair and wooden handrail kits (idividually available) if you really want to. The advantages of an integrated wooden handrail are: kids will have less opportunity to slide between the stair balustrade and the steps (the steps go under the balustrade) and the steps are mounted a float with the staircase.
Outdoor stairs with counter steps
Outdoor stairs with counter steps
What are counter steps?
Counter steps are the upright planks between the steps of your outdoor staircase. They close the gap between the stair steps.
Most people think counter steps only have a visual benefit, but thats not true... There is also a mechanical benefit: the counter step supports the step on top of it, prohibiting the stair step to bend through or deflect. The stair step on top of the counter step will have a much higher capacity and stability.
Counter steps also provide more stability to your outdoor staircase and wooden handrail as a whole. Counter steps prevent the staircase to move left or right when walking on it or leaning to the stair balustrade.
When using counter steps, you can enlarge the distance between the stringers to 80cm. Attention, private use only, for professional application you really need an additional stringer! (or 2 like on the images!)
In these kits, we propose outdoor stairs with counter steps only.
Outdoor stairs without counter steps
Why is this outdoor stair equiped with a garden steps module for the heights of 8 or 9 steps?
The garden steps module is the additional step that you slide under the stairs to get the 8th step. (our standard stairs go only 7 steps high). We suggest a module of 4 planks deep, the first 2 planks are slid under the stair, the other 2 are the additional step. (as you can see on the images above)
We also provide the same outdoor stairs without a garden steps module. In that case we use a connection support enabling you to combine 2 outdoor stairs kits up to a maximum height of 14 steps! We propose this combination with garden steps modules as it is easier to assemble for 8 or 9 step high stairs and cheaper then the version with integrated connection support.
Outdoor stair support posts
This outside stair kit is composed with support posts to make it entirely free standing. (a model for assembly against a wall or deck is also available). The number of supports posts included depends on the number of stringers for your outdoor stairs, normally 2 or 3 depending on the width. (on the images you see a model with 4 stringers, especcially build for a restaurant for public use).
A horizontal support post is also included to provide additional stability to the stairs outside.
Fastening of the support posts
You might have mentioned that I prefer heavy duty constructions. In the outside posts, we pre-drill wholes for the 8x180mm Reisser stainless steel screws, you'll only need to drive the screws in.
If the outdoor stairs kit contains a 3rd post in the middle, you simple fix this one with the Reisser Retinox 6x120mm screws, included in the kit. (No need to pre-drill any wholes, simply drive the screws in)
How do I fix the stairs to the additional stair step?
Very easy to do, sets of 4 small galvanized brackets are included in the kit.
Screw them in the angle between the stringer and the step underneath.
In the case of 2 additional step modules, fix the border of the top model with the brackets on the inside to the model underneath, before screwing the step planks on top of the top module.
