An outdoor staircase is an important part of your garden or terrace. Your outdoor staircase ensures that height differences in your garden can be easily bridged and that it also looks nice and neat! The most important thing, of course, is convenience - you need to be able to move easily from your balcony or terrace to the garden or through the different height zones in your garden. Of course, you can look for beautiful, and often expensive, ready-made stairs, but if you find any, they're often just not the right size and you'll spend a lot of money as well. That's why we recommend that you make your own garden steps, because with our ready-made components, kits and advices, it's really not that difficult!

Voorraad waarschuwing! Dear customer!
Due to the enormous worldwide demand, there is a shortage of wood in Europe. As a result, we are changing the available stair treads and are rewriting this page. The page will therefore be a bit messy in the coming week, our apologies!

New in 2021, the XL outdoor staircase with extra deep steps!

Vinuovo has developed a new outdoor staircase XL model. This garden staircase has deeper steps and a lower angle of inclination than the standard wooden outdoor staircase.

What is the difference between the standard outdoor staircase and the XL outdoor staircase?
The XL outdoor staircase has deeper steps and a less steep angle of inclination. This makes it easier to climb the stairs, especially if you have difficulty walking. Because of this smaller slope the staircase is longer and has a different effect which gives a more spacious and luxurious effect in your garden.
The XL garden steps are just as easy to install as the regular steps, just screw them together and the job's done!

The following models of the XL outdoor staircase are now available:

Which stair step for your outdoor staircase?

Outdoor staircase step type A

trapbalk of trapwang voor tuintrap hout buiten

Outdoor staircase step type A is a smooth impregnated wooden decking board with a head dimension of 120x28mm. This stairstep is only available in 60cm and 120cm width. Per step 2 decking boards of type A are delivered with the right number of screws.
In the ends of these decking boards for the stair step, there are 2 pre-drilled holes, for these, we supply the screws : Reisser TKS-RVS 6x60mm, which have an extra large screw head.
Are you opting for an outdoor staircase of 120 cm width? In that case we supply the Reisser TKS-RVS screws, 2 Reisser stainless steel screws for floor boards 5x60mm extra, with which you screw the steps onto the middle staircase stringer. The holes for these screws are not pre-drilled. Because of the small screw head, these screws will be less visible.
ADVICE!: Do you wish an outside staircase with step type A of 80cm or, for example, 100cm wide? Then you can order the different parts separately, you will need:

  • 2 staircase stringers with the desired number of steps
  • Per step 2 decking boards of 120cm, which you saw yourself to the desired width.
  • Per shelf 4 Reisser stainless steel screws for floorboards 5x60mm (so 8 screws per step!)
  • Fixing brackets as required.

Please note that the type A stair step is difficult to combine with the galvanised metal staircase stringers for an outdoor steel staircase! The position of the pre-drilled holes in the type A stair step do not match the pre-drilled holes in the galvanised steel staircase stringers for an outdoor steel staircase. Everything is of course possible; if you do want to combine the type A step with the steel staircase stringer, you will just have to drill new holes in the steel.

There are no risers available for the type A steps. As the decking boards do not protrude at the frontside of the step, we judge it less attractive to screw a step in front of them.
(Risers are decking boards that are screwed between 2 outside stair treads in an upright position to close the gap between 2 treads).
Should you wish to have risers anyway, then you can of course order the decking boards type A and the necessary screws separately!
The wooden outdoor staircase type A is available in the following models:

Outdoor staircase step type B

Outdoor stairway step type B is an impregnated, extra thick decking board with a head dimension of 145x32mm. Unfortunately this stairstep is (with the exception of the remaining stock) no longer available in 2021! This stairstep is available in 60cm, 80cm, 100cm, 120cm, 140cm and 160cm width.
There are no pre-drilled screw holes in these steps, so you are free to place the staircase stringer where you want.
With these stair steps we provide you with sufficient Reisser stainless steel screws 5x60mm for floor boards to screw the stair treads on the staircase stringer your outdoor staircase. Due to the small screw head, these screws will be hardly visible.

Outdoor staircase step type C

Available from June 15th 2021!

Outdoor stair step type C is an impregnated decking board with a head dimension of 145x27mm. Although the decking board is a bit thinner than type B, this decking board is also very suitable for your outdoor staircase. This stairstep is available in 60cm, 80cm, 100cm, 120cm, 140cm and 160cm width.
There are no pre-drilled screw holes in these decking boards, so you are free to place the staircase stringer where you want.
With these stair decking boards we will provide you with the necessary Reisser stainless steel screws 5x60mm for floor boards to screw the stair shelfs on the stair stringer of your outdoor staircase. Due to the small screw head, these screws will be hardly visible.

Outdoor staircase step type D

Exterior staircase step type D is a hardwood Bangkirai decking board with an end dimension of 145x28mm. A hardwoodhout decking board is excellent for your garden stairs! Due to its great strength, it is not only resistant to bending, the edge of a hardwood step will also wear out less quickly than that of a softwood step. This hardwood decking board is available in 60cm, 80cm, 100cm, 120cm, 140cm and 160cm widths (and even up to more than 6 metres long on special request, subject to available stock!). You can create an outdoor hardwood staircase with the greatest of ease!
The outdoor staircase with hardwood steps can be perfectly combined with the galvanised steel stringers for a steel outdoor staircase! Not only very beautiful, but also very durable!

Freestanding staircase

Are you looking for a free-standing outdoor staircase that you do not need to fix to the ground or wall?
For example for an outdoor staircase to acces a roof terrace? That is possible! As an option you can order support posts with our outdoor staircase. Per staircase stringer you screw 1 support post under the top step against the staircase stringer. Each support post is delivered with 2 Hardwood screw Ø8mm in stainless steel A2 with wafer head to secure the support post. For stairs with 5 or more steps, we recommend to order the set with diagonal braces for more stability of your outdoor staircase.
The support posts are also perfectly suited to extend your outdoor staircase, with or without platform, but more about that at the bottom of this page!
Below you can find a list of the available support posts for your garden steps, with or without struts.

  • Laminated wooden post support 9x9x34cm + stainless steel screws for outdoor stairs with two steps
  • Laminated wooden post support 9x9x51cm + stainless steel screws for outdoor stairs with three steps
  • Laminated wooden post support 9x9x68cm + stainless steel screws for outdoor stairs with four steps
  • Laminated wooden post support 9x9x85cm + stainless steel screws for outdoor stairs with five steps
  • Laminated wooden post support 9x9x102cm + stainless steel screws for outdoor stairs with six steps
  • Laminated wooden post support 9x9x119cm + stainless steel screws for outdoor stairs with seven steps

Metal outdoor staircase

New for 2021 is the metal outdoor staircase kit. This outdoor staircase is not entirely made of metal, but a combination of hot-galvanised metal staircase stringers and wooden decking boards for the treads.
With this combination of an metal outdoor staircase and a hardwood outdoor staircase sufficient stainless steel bolts, washers and nuts are supplied to fully assemble the staircase.
The metal outdoor staircase is available in the following heights and types of steps:

To fix this steel outdoor staircase to the wall and the floor, you can use the extra heavy duty galvanised screws. If the wall or surface is sturdy enough, you do not need to use any plugs with these bolts. The special screw thread will screw itself completely into the surface, such as concrete or wood. When fixing in brick or another brittle material, we recommend using chemical plugs. This is a kind of 2-component kit that you can spray into the wall and which hardens around the bolt.

Which screws and bolts can we supply to make your outdoor staircase?

Sorry, this list still needs to be made, we are working hard on it! For advice, ask your question via chat, email: [email protected] or per telephone: 0033 7 83 39 26 80 (You will be answered in English by Alies or Vincent!)

How many staircase stringers do you need to build an outdoor staircase?

We recommend that you do not place stringers more than 60cm apart. With a greater distance, the step of your garden stairs bends too far and you take the risk of it breaking!
Also, do not use decking boards thinner than 25mm to make a stair step. We also know that a decking board of only 21mm thick is much cheaper at the corner shop, but this is really much too thin and will break too quickly!
You can, however, have the stair step protrude over the stair beam. For example, do you want an outside wooden staircase of 80cm or 100cm wide? Place the stringers 50cm apart and let the step protrude 10cm or 20cm on each side. Because you always walk in the middle of your garden stairs, this is fine! For a width of 120cm or more, we recommend using at least 3 stringers. One in the middle and on each side another stringer at 50cm distance from the middle one. (or at the end with staircase type A).
With 3 stringers you can create an outside staircase up to 160cm wide, just let the ends of the step cross. For every 60cm that you make your garden stairs wider, you use 1 extra stringer.

Every outdoor staircase kit in our collection is delivered with the following number of staircase stringers::

  • 60cm - 80cm - 100cm width = 2 staircase stringers
  • 120cm - 140cm - 160cm width = 3 staircase stringers

Of course, each kit, for wooden-or steel outdoor staircases, will be delivered with sufficient screws or bolts so you can make a complete garden staircase!

Which decking board do you need for your outdoor staircase?

Earlier we have explained the difference between the different decking boards in our assortment in order to build an outdoor staircase. All these decking boards can of course also be ordered separately so that you can make a decking before or after your garden stairs, or for other wooden constructions in your garden.
Below you will find a list of the available wooden decking boards you can order separately for your outdoor staircase.

  • Decking board for staircase type A; impregnated garden wood with head size 120x28mm, available in 60cm and 120cm width
  • Decking board for stair step type B; impregnated extra thick Decking board with head dimension 145x32mm, available in various widths (unfortunately no longer available in 2021!)
  • Decking board for stair tread type C; impregnated floor board with head dimension 145x27mm, available in various widths
  • Decking board for stair tread type D; Bangkirai hardwood Decking board with head dimension 145x28mm, available in various widths

How do you attach the steps to your outside staircase?

Do you want to make an outdoor wooden staircase? Then it is very simple; just use good stainless steel screws. (Steel screws that have been treated are of course cheaper, but because you are walking on an outside staircase, the coating wears off very quickly and your screw starts to rust! Once that has started, your screw will rust through completely within two to three years and then your garden stairs will simply collapse... We don't think that's a very safe idea!
To fix the wooden steps on your metal outside staircase we recommend the stainless steel set of carriage bolt, 2 washers and a nut Reisser stainless steel fastening set for garden steps. . You need 2 bolts or screws per stair rail and plank for the step. (Note: 2 planks per step!). So a staircase with 3 treads? 3x 2 planks = 6 planks. 6 x 3 treads = 18, 2 screws/bolts per plank, that becomes 18x2 = 36 screws or bolts for this garden staircase! It is correct taht an ordinary carriage bolt from the hardware store is cheaper than our stainless steel carriage bolts. But again, you walk on the head of the bolt, so the protective layer will wear off and your bolt will rust, nothing left to do.

How to you choose an outdoor staircase?

An outdoor staircase or garden steps are the most important element in your garden to compensate height differences.
There are many reasons why you would want to make an outdoor staircase in your garden. For example, an outdoor wooden staircase that descends to the bank of the water next to your house, or you live in a split-level house and the height of your terrace or living room is not equal to the height of your garden. Or you live on the first floor of a building and can use the communal garden? In that case, choose an external staircase!
Wooden or metal outdoor staircases can of course also be used as an outdoor staircase to acces a roof terrace or descend to a basement. With the components that we can deliver for your garden steps you can make almost any outdoor staircase that you can think of. But how do you choose such an outdoor staircase? Let's start by making a list of the different types of stairs that are available:

What type of outdoor staircase should I choose?

Stairs come in all shapes and sizes and of course in many different materials. Indoors, you have more choice of materials because they are not exposed to the weather. On the other hand, the finish of an indoor staircase is often much more important and this, of course, increases the price. A simple staircase for indoors can be made with our materials such as a stringer, also called stair rail and the planks we have in our assortment for the steps. However, for a luxurious staircase at home that is to become a showpiece in your interior, we recommend that you consult a staircase specialist. At Vinuovo we mainly focus on the outdoor staircase, Each to their own speciality, right?
Well, to make a long story shorter, what different types of stairs exist?

  • Wooden outdoor staircase his type of garden staircase is made entirely of wood. You can choose from various types of wood and models, such as a straight outdoor staircase or a round outdoor staircase. Of course you can also choose from different types of wood, such as hardwood or softwood outdoor steps. Please note that softwood must be impregnated when you use it for your garden stairs, otherwise it will rot away within 3 to 4 years!
  • Metal outdoor staircase With a metal outdoor staircase it is important to make a distinction between 2 different types of stairs. First think about the round and straight steel fire escapes that are mainly built as an escape route and for your safety. These are generally very ugly and of course you don't want them in your garden! Don't panic, there are also beautiful combinations possible with a metal outdoor staircase, especially the combination of an iron outdoor staircase with a beautiful kind of wood, like Bankirai hardwood for example. We can also supply various materials for this, but more about that later.
  • Concrete outdoor staircases A ready-made concrete outdoor staircase can be bought at the professional DIY stores. These are heavy complete stairs that have to be placed with a crane and you have to finish it afterwards, not really handy. A concrete outdoor staircase made of concrete can also be made from ready-mixed concrete blocks that have been produced especially for this purpose.
  • Stone outdoor staircase An exterior staircase stone is usually made of clinkers or bricks. You can also use tiles for your garden steps. In both cases you will have to build a structure.
  • WPC outdoor staircase Wood composite is also called WPC (wood plastic composite). At first sight we really don't recommend this material for outdoor stairs, it is just too dangerous! Good wood composite is a beautiful material with the biggest advantage that it does not rot. Ideal, you think... But unfortunately, wood composite is a rather soft material that bends and breaks easily. It could only be used when reinforced with steel... and we happen to have a solution for that! (More about this later...)
