There are plenty of variations possible when ordering your deck stairs with handrail. It all depends on your personal situation and preferences.
To ensure each customer can modify the stairs to it's own needs, we have created this deck stair bundle configurator.
We have tried to make it as easy as possible, but you have to ask yourself some questions before ordering.
Please find a list of these questions below.
Once you are ready to order, please click the red button under the price: customize and add to cart
A list of all the options will unfold, select what you need and confirm your order.
Do you have any questions? Please don't hesitate to contact our customer service, they will advise you with pleasure!
Please find below a list of heights of our deck stair with handrailing bundles.
The height is the height of the last stair step, the height of the handrail goes on top of that.
You are currently in the bundle marked in red.
You wish to buy another height? Simply click on the desired height below and you'll be taken to the correct bundle.
Before you select the width of your outdoor stairs, please bear in mind that there are 2 ways to mount the stair balustrade: integrated or external.
The balusters are integrated within the width of your stair step. A hole needs to be cut in some stair steps to make space for the baluster. This decreases the effective width of your step!
If you have a 60cm wide stair and you would cut out 85mm on the left and right for your balusters, the effective width of your stair becomes 43 centimeters... Frankly speaking; you need to be a very skinny person to climb those stairs!
The advantages are: kids will have less opportunity to slide between the stair balustrade and the steps (the steps go under the balustrade) and the steps are mounted a float with the staircase.
Please take following points into account:
The stair balustrade is mounted on the side of the stairs. This means you'll need to mount the stringers on the edge of the stairs and you'll screw the balusters to the stringers.
Please take following points into account:
What are counter steps?
Counter steps are the upright planks between the steps of your outdoor staircase. They close the gap between the stair steps.
Most people think counter steps only have a visual benefit, but thats not true...
There is also a mechanical benefit: the counter step supports the step on top of it, prohibiting the stair step to bend through or deflect.
The stair step on top of the counter step will have a much higher capacity and stability.
Counter steps also provide more stability to your outdoor staircase as a whole. Counter steps prevent the staircase to move left or right when walking on it or leaning to the stair balustrade.
When using counter steps, you can enlarge the distance between the stringers to 80cm. Attention, private use only, for professional application you really need an additional stringer! (or 2!)
We hope you have found your answers on question 1 and 2, you are ready now to choose the stairs for your outdoor stairs with stair balustrade!
(We have made a default selection for you; 120cm wide like on the photo's, with counter steps )
The garden steps module is the additional step that you slide under the stairs to get the 8th step. (our standard stairs go only 7 steps high).
We recommend a module of 4 planks deep, the first 2 planks are slid under the stair, the other 2 are the additional step. (as you can see on the images above)
In case you opt for an integrated assembly of the stair balustrade, select the module at least in the same width of your stairs. (wider is no problem)
For an external assembly, the additional step should be at least 20cm wider then the width of the stairs, else the 2 front posts won't fit on the additional step.
Each stair balustrade or handrail can be used on the left or right side of the stairs.
So, no mather on which side you would like to assemble the handrail, order 1 piece.
If you prefer a handrail on both sides (like on the images), simply order 2 pieces.
These stair balustrades contain à long support post on the top of the stairs.
In case you like to fix the top of your stairs to a wall or deck, you don't really need this support post. A model without this long post is under development, unfortunately not available yet on our website.
So, you go for the stair balustrade with the long support post (riser)... This enables you to have a free-standing staircase, but: you need to have a post for each stringer under your staircase!
(You can fix the other stringers without risers directly to a wall or deck to, in that case order as much stringer mounting brackets as you need).
How much stringers for your outdoor stairs?
Our deck stairs with a width of 60 - 80 - 100cm have 2 stringers, 120 - 140 - 160cm wide have 3 stringers. (yes, on the images you see 4 stringers, this model was build especially for a restaurant for public use)
You have to support them all to assemble free-standing deck stairs.
In case you order 2 stair balustrades, you already have 2 support posts, so you're fine for a width of 60 - 80 - 100cm wide. In case you order only 1 stair balustrade, you'll need 1 support post.
In case you order 2 stair balustrades and a deck stair 120 - 140 - 160cm wide, you'll need 1 support post for the stringer in the middle. 1 in addition if you order only 1 balustrade.
In the option menu, you see the support post with the correct height already, simply select the number of support posts you need (if any).
(Screws to fix the stringers to the post are supplied with the post, no need to order them seperately)
To increase the stability of your stair balustrade and deck stair overall, it's recommended to add a horizontal support post between the 2 long posts or risers. (Not required if you fix your outdoor stairs to a wall or deck)
For your reference, please find here a list of the required length for this post:
|deck stair width||length when handrail mounted "outside" of the stairs||length when handrail integrated in your deck stairs|
To fix the horizontal support post to the 2 posts of the deck balustrade, you'll need 4 screws Reisser TKS 8x180mm.
(We don't pre-drill the wholes in the vertical posts to allow you to assemble the horizontal post on any desired height. Simply pre-drill 2 wholes Ø6mm in the vertical post and drive the screws in.)
You might have mentioned that I prefer heavy duty constructions. So yes, I prefer that you also screw the additional, vertical support post to the horizontal one.
For that, you'll need 2 screws Reisser Retinox 6x120mm. simply order 2 if required.
(No need to pre-drill any wholes, simply drive the screws in)
This is not realy a question, you simply need to fix the bottom of the stringers to the additional stair step underneath.
Very easy to do, please order 1 set of 4 small galvanized brackets and screw them in the angle between the stringer and the step underneath.
