Deck stairs FAQ

❓Does choosing a stair with risers change the depth of the tread?

Yes, choosing a stair with risers does change the usable tread depth.

  • Without a riser, the tread depth is 29 cm.

  • With a riser, the riser is installed on top of the tread, reducing the usable tread depth to 26 cm.

This difference should be taken into account when selecting a stair configuration, especially when comfort and walking space are important.

❓What is the maximum width between 2 stair stringers?

The maximum recommended distance between two outdoor stair stringers is 60 cm (23.6 inches).

This limitation is important for structural strength, safety and long-term durability of outdoor stairs.

There are two main reasons for this maximum spacing:

  1. Tread support and bending prevention
Stair treads are typically 27 mm thick. If the distance between stair stringers exceeds 60 cm, the treads may flex, bend or crack over time, especially under repeated use.
  2. Load capacity and safety
Outdoor stairs must support significant weight.
In situations where multiple people stand on the stairs at the same time (for example during a group photo), the total load can reach several hundred kilograms. Proper stringer spacing ensures the stairs can safely carry this weight without structural failure.

⚠️ Important for public or commercial use:
For public-access stairs, we strongly recommend installing one outdoor stair stringer every 40 cm to meet higher safety and load requirements.

❓What heights are Vinuovo outdoor stairs available in?

Vinuovo outdoor stairs are available in a wide range of heights, depending on the model you choose.

The maximum height of a Vinuovo outdoor stair is 295 cm (approximately 116 inches).

Because Vinuovo stairs are modular, the exact height options vary per model and configuration.

To see all available stair models and supported heights, we recommend using the Vinuovo Deck Stairs Configurator, where you can select the model that best fits your terrace or garden height.

❓Can I buy additional railings to extend the railing of my Vinuovo outdoor stairs?

Yes, you can purchase additional railings that match the style of your Vinuovo outdoor stairs.
These railings can be used to extend the stair railing on your deck, terrace, veranda, rooftop or balcony, creating a consistent and safe outdoor railing system.

Vinuovo railings are supplied in standard lengths.
Cutting railings to custom sizes is only possible under certain conditions and may involve additional costs.

Vinuovo is continuously developing new outdoor handrail and railing solutions.
For the latest products and updates, please visit our  Stair handrail page.

❓Can Vinuovo provide tailor-made or fully custom outdoor stair solutions?

Vinuovo does not offer fully tailor-made or completely custom outdoor stairs.
However, certain components and configurations can be adjusted within defined limits.

Below is a clear overview of what can and cannot be customized.

Stair Stringers (Height)

❌ Stair stringers cannot be customized in height by Vinuovo.

Our stair stringers are manufactured in very large production runs using specialized industrial machinery. Producing custom-height stringers would require dedicated tooling and production, resulting in costs of hundreds or even thousands of euros.

Small height adjustments (wooden stringers only):
If the required height difference is only a few centimeters, wooden stringers can be cut to size by the customer during installation.

Stair Width Customization

Standard stair widths

Vinuovo outdoor stairs are available as standard in the following widths:
60 / 80 / 100 / 120 / 140 / 160 cm

Can I customize the stair width myself?

Yes. For the stair series BERLIN, OSLO, BALI and MADRID, the wooden treads can be cut to size by yourself using standard woodworking tools.

Example:
If you need a stair width of 150 cm, you can order the 160 cm version and cut the wooden treads to the desired width.

Extra-Wide Outdoor Stairs

Widths larger than 160 cm

  • MADRID is also available in 180 cm
  • BALI treads are generally available in lengths of over 300 cm

⚠️ Important transport limitation:
Standard shipping solutions allow transport of components up to 240 cm in length.
Longer components require specialized transport with large trucks, which can cost more than double the regular shipping price.

➡️ That said, custom wide stairs are not impossible.
For example, Vinuovo recently supplied a BALI outdoor stair with 7 steps, 320 cm wide including railings, for an amusement park.

Railings & Handrails

Railings are difficult and expensive to customize.

Custom railing solutions often require:

  • Dedicated design work
  • Specialized production orders
  • Custom tooling

This makes fully custom railings significantly more expensive than standard solutions.

Conclusion

Vinuovo offers thousands of standard outdoor stair configurations, covering most residential and professional use cases.
We strongly recommend selecting a solution from these standard options whenever possible.

If you require a highly specialized outdoor stair solution and are willing to accept the higher costs, please contact our customer service team. We will be happy to review what may be possible.

❓Can I screw hardwood treads onto pine wood stair stringers?

Yes, it is technically possible, but Vinuovo does not recommend it.

Hardwood (tropical or exotic wood) is extremely dense and strong. When hardwood expands, bends or twists due to moisture or temperature changes, it generates much higher forces than pine wood. This difference in material behavior creates risks.

Main risks

  1. Screws may be pulled out of the pine stringer
When the hardwood tread moves, it can pull the screws out of the softer pine stair stringer.

???? The risk can be reduced by using extra-long decking screws
(at least 80 mm for a tread thickness of 27 mm).

  2. Loss of screw grip if not predrilled correctly
When fastening hardwood treads, it is essential to predrill a countersunk (conical) hole in the tread for the screw head.

    If this is not done:

    • the hardwood resists the screw head

    • the screw starts spinning in the soft pine

    • the stringer gets drilled out

    • the screw loses grip and the tread may loosen over time

Conclusion

Although you can screw hardwood treads onto pine stair stringers, Vinuovo strongly advises against this combination due to long-term durability and safety concerns.

❓How do I fix Vinuovo outdoor stairs to a wall or floor?

The correct way to fix Vinuovo outdoor stairs to a wall or floor depends on the construction material (for example concrete, wood, stone or brick).
Because there are many possible installation surfaces, there is no single universal fixing method.

To help you choose the right solution, we have written a dedicated blog post that explains:

  • suitable fixing methods per surface type

  • recommended anchors and fasteners

  • practical installation tips and common mistakes

Please read the blog post for detailed guidance:

❓How do I choose my deck stairs?

Please visit our deckstairs configurator to help you make the best choice and provide you with the most suitable product.

❓How do I install Vinuovo outdoor stairs?

Vinuovo outdoor stairs are designed for DIY installation and are not very complicated to assemble in most cases.
With basic tools and technical insight, any skilled handyman or local installer should be able to install the stairs successfully.

For detailed, step-by-step instructions, please consult the following installation manuals and resources:

❓Which staircase is most suitable for people (or dogs) who have difficulty walking?

The MADRID XL outdoor staircase is the most suitable option for people (or dogs) who have difficulty walking or climbing standard stairs.

The MADRID XL is a so-called “lazy stair”, designed for maximum comfort and safety:

  • Low step height: each step has a rise of only 13 cm

  • Deep steps: each tread has a depth of 39 cm, making walking easier and more stable

This gentle incline makes the MADRID XL ideal for:

  • elderly people

  • people with reduced mobility

  • dogs or pets

  • everyday comfortable outdoor access

The MADRID XL outdoor stairs are available in widths of 60 cm, 120 cm and 180 cm.

❓Can I paint my deck stairs?

Yes, you can paint your deck stairs.
However, it is important to follow the correct preparation steps to ensure a durable and long-lasting result.

Please pay attention to the following points:

  • Pressure-treated (impregnated) wood contains a lot of moisture after treatment.
During the impregnation process, the wood absorbs moisture. Vinuovo dries the wood as slowly as possible to reduce the risk of deformation.
  • Allow the wood to dry thoroughly after installation.
Once your deck stairs are assembled, let the wood dry naturally for as long as possible.
When the wood is fully dry, you may notice small surface cracks—this is a normal and natural sign that the wood has dried sufficiently.
  • Paint only adheres properly to dry wood.
Paint needs to penetrate the wood surface. If the wood is still moist, the paint will not bond correctly and may peel or fail prematurely.
  • Once the wood is completely dry, you can paint it without any issues.

For detailed instructions and best practices, please see:
Can I paint impregnated wood?

❓Can Vinuovo install the stairs for me?

No, Vinuovo does not offer installation services. Unfortunately, we do not have installation teams traveling across Europe to install outdoor stairs.

However, Vinuovo outdoor stairs are designed for DIY installation and are generally not very complicated to assemble. In most cases, any skilled handyman or local installer will be able to install the stairs without difficulty.

For more detailed information about assembly and installation, please refer to the following manuals and resources:

MILANO outdoor stair with handrail and landing

❓Where do I find the assembly manual for the MILANO outdoor stairs?

The installation manual can be found under the technical drawing at the top of each product page.
It is best to navigate to the Milano web page, scroll down, and you will find the link under the technical drawing, where you can find the latest version.

❓In what lengths is the MILANO outdoor landing available?

The MILANO outdoor staircase with landing is available in two landing lengths, allowing you to choose the configuration that best suits your entrance, terrace or outdoor space.

Short landing:

  • Landing length: 87 cm (dimension G)
  • Plus highest tread: 29 cm
  • Total length: 116 cm

Long landing

  • Landing length: 160 cm (dimension G)
  • Plus highest tread: 29 cm
  • Total length: 189 cm

❗Important installation information
The highest stair tread is always at the same height as the landing, ensuring:

  • a safe and comfortable transition
  • a stable access to your front door or terrace

This design is standard for the MILANO outdoor wooden staircase and guarantees optimal ease of use.

???? Which landing length should I choose?

  • For a standard house entrance
Most front doors have an average width of 100 cm.
???? The short landing (116 cm) is therefore perfectly suitable for direct access in front of your house door.
  • For extra comfort and space
The long landing (189 cm) offers additional room, ideal for:
    • placing plants or decoration
    • temporarily putting down shopping bags or packages
    • creating a more comfortable outdoor entrance area

???? Need a visual reference?

Please refer to the technical drawing to clearly understand the landing dimensions and configuration options of the MILANO outdoor staircase with landing.

❓Should the MILANO outdoor staircase be fixed to the floor or wall?

The MILANO outdoor staircase with landing features a solid, self-supporting wooden structure that offers excellent stability under normal use.

However, for maximum safety and long-term durability, it is strongly recommended to:

  • Fix the staircase to the floor, and
  • Secure it to the wall or façade, whenever possible.

Why is fixing the staircase recommended?

Proper fixation helps to:

  • prevent movement or sliding over time
  • avoid tipping or instability, especially when:
    • people lean on the railings
    • children climb or play near the staircase
  • increase overall safety and comfort

Fixing the staircase also contributes to a longer lifespan and improved resistance to daily use and weather conditions.

⚠️ Important note

Floor and wall fixings are not included, as the required anchors depend on the type of surface (concrete, wood, stone, etc.).
Always use appropriate fixings suitable for your installation surface or consult a professional installer if needed.

❓What different handrails are available for the Milano?

We propose 7 different railing options for the Milano outdoor stairs with landing.

Please find here an image of all different railing opportunities: "image  with opportunities"

We use a railing codification to specify exactly how the railings are placed.
For the Milano 3 to 8 steps, there are 7 different options.

Imagine that you are in front of the outdoor stairscase with landing, you should imagine these codes clockwise:

  • L = railing on the Left
  • E = railing on the End (rear)
  • R = railing on the Right
  • O = Open

If you see the railing code: LOERR, it means:

  1. L = railing on the left of the stairs
  2. O = the Left side of the landing is open
  3. E = railing on the End / Rear of the landing
  4. R = railing on the Right of the landing
  5. R = railing on the Right of the stairs.

The railing codes for Milano stairs higher then 8 steps (coming soon!) are more complex, we will explain them later.

❓What is the angle of inclination of the Milano outdoor staircase?

The angle of inclination of the Milano outdoor staircase is 34.2°.
Each step has a rise (step height) of 17 cm, providing a comfortable and safe walking angle for outdoor use.

Delivered by GLS or UPS, depending on parcel dimensions and delivery location.

  • Larger outdoor stairs:
Delivered by Kuehne + Nagel using a large truck, due to size and weight.

Please note that deliveries handled by Kuehne + Nagel generally require more delivery time than standard parcel shipments.

❓I live in the countryside and don’t have an exact address. What should I do?

If you do not have an exact address, please enter the closest possible address to your home when placing your order.

In the order remarks, we kindly ask you to include:

  • GPS coordinates

  • A clear description of your home (for example: purple shutters, yellow gate)

We will add these additional instructions to the shipment in the hope that the delivery driver will read them and be able to locate your home.

Please note that carrier IT systems do not allow us to transmit detailed delivery instructions digitally, so we cannot guarantee that all information will be visible to the driver.

If you would like your Vinuovo stairs delivered to your second home during a specific period, please include this information in the order comments when placing your order.

We will add these additional instructions to the shipment, in the hope that the delivery driver will read them and attempt delivery during the requested period.

⚠️ Important notice
Especially between Christmas and New Year, delivery networks are often under heavy pressure due to high volumes and many drivers being on holiday. As a result, delivery timing may be less predictable.

Unfortunately, carrier IT systems do not allow us to transmit detailed delivery instructions or specific delivery dates digitally, so delivery within an exact timeframe cannot be guaranteed.

❓I don’t live on the ground floor. Will the driver carry the parcels upstairs?

No. The carrier will deliver the products at ground level, in front of your house or building.

If you have a long driveway, the driver is only obliged to deliver the shipment up to the point where the public road ends.

???? Tip: Being kind to the driver (or offering a small tip) can sometimes make a big difference—but this is entirely at the driver’s discretion.

❓Does Vinuovo deliver on Saturdays?

No. Vinuovo deliveries take place on working days only, generally between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM.

In some dense urban areas, a carrier may occasionally offer evening delivery, but these are rare exceptions and should not be relied upon.

❓Does Vinuovo deliver to pickup points or parcel shops?

In general, no. Most Vinuovo stair packages are too long and/or too heavy to be accepted by pickup points or parcel shops.

In rare cases, a driver may decide to deliver a parcel to a nearby pickup point if you are not at home, but this is a real exception and cannot be requested or guaranteed.

❓I'm only at home between 12h00 and 13h00 hours, can you arrange delivery within this hour?

No. On average, a driver needs to deliver between 60 and 90 customers a day.
The driver will choose the most optimal route to deliver everyone.
Some carriers, in some areas (like GLS), provide a tracking of the actual driver that will deliver you.
This might allow you to better estimate the time of arrival expected, but remember, it's an estimation.

❓I received only part of my order. Is something missing?

In most cases, nothing is missing. Orders are sometimes shipped in multiple packages, which may be delivered at different times.

It is possible that you receive part of your order first, while the remaining items arrive 1–2 days later.

Please rest assured that all parts of your order are on their way.
You can track each individual package using the track & trace number(s) provided after shipment.

❓Can I modify my order after placing it?

Yes. You can request changes as long as your order has not yet been shipped.
Please contact Vinuovo customer service as soon as possible after placing your order.

  • Adding a product
(For adding items, we recommend placing a new order.)
